MANA _ India's last village

A journey with mesmerizing view of river Saraswati flowing in one side and enjoy the feeling of being involved with nature while any one will visit India's last village named as MANA. It is a small hamlet 3 km north of Badrinath, where small village houses, narrow lanes leading up towards mountains are natural scenic beauty.

Location

Mana is about 50 kms from Josimath. Both the Badrinath and Mana is situated at the altitude 3100 mts. The village is covered with snow during winter mid-November onwards and remain inaccessible for few months.

Mythology

Mana is also known as Mani Bhadrashram in Hindu scriptures. Situated on the slope of stabilized  debris in the Alakananda at the confluence of two rivers, it was known in the celestial Era,
when Gods roamed the Earth; as Manibhadra Ashram, giving its name Mana; from here one path leads to Kailas (Celestial Abode of Shiva ).

Inhabitants

The region is peopled with the Himalayan semi-nomads with some 150 in numbers who form small group, similar to the Jadhs, and move down, in winter to Josimath and Chamoli, when the village is deserted and covered with a thick blanket of snow.

Mostly Rajputs, the people who are poor, are known as the Marchyas, and have lost their traditional ties with Tibet and China without gaining any substitute. With the mechanization of the roads however, many changes are coming into their way of life.

Women are knitting woolen clothes and every backyard grows vegetables of some kind i.e. sustainable living and few shops are open to make their livelihood a little better.

Mountaineers and tourists visit the area to climb Neelkantha and Chaukhamba, dotted with military posts all along up to the Mana pass on the border, 6.4 km away.

The villagers of Mana are closely linked with the activities of Sri Badrinath temple and annual worship of Mata Murti. On the closing day of temple, a choli is presented by Molpas of Mana to the Deity, to keep Him warm during winter. This is a part of rituals and the choli is spun and woven at Mana.

Its surroundings

Ghanteswari Temple

It is one of the holy temple situated in village, where large bells are in the ear of Devi and it is believed that anyone tell a lie, the bell will automatically rang soon after.

Keshavprayag

It is situated very near to Mana where Saraswati river make its confluence with Alakananda river through a hanging valley. Rising near mana pass on the border, the Saraswati emerges from a lateral glacier about 3 km from north of MAna and the ancient trade route to tibet goes along its course. During the months from October to May the waters of Saraswati are blue and beautiful, contrasting with colourless waters of the Alkananda.

Bhim Shila

On the outskirts of Mana village there is natural bridge, a huge boulder, lying across the river. The boulder, it is said was put into by lord Bhim, (supposedly where Bhima moved a rock for Draupadi to cross the river) while they were on their way to heaven. The steps which are like the ice formation of the Satopanth glacier are believed to be the "Stairway to Heaven". The Bhimpul or Bhim shila provides a spectacular and awe-inspiring sight at the Saraswati, with deafening roar, thunders down the scrlptured gorge and churns out milky white strands of water. Unfortunately, the bridge has no protective railings.

Vyas Gupha

Along the river side road from Keshovprayag, the cave is situated known as Vyas Gupha where Vyasdev composed the account of the Mahabharat and gave to the world the immortal words of lord Krishna, when he exhorted the unwilling Arjun to plunge into the battle and enunciated the"Bhagvat Geeta" the lord Krishna's philosophy of life. Faithful Ganesh, to whom the poet dictated the words, lived in the adjoining cave. he wrote it is believed, on the massive rocks that abounded in the area, and closely on the outskirts of the cave are the records of the manuscript, piled up one on top of the other.

Vasudhara Falls

Nature has not stinted in lavishing beauty, both awesome and majestic. At the distance of 8 km from the main shrine of Badrinath and 5 km from the Mana village are the extravagantly beautiful and mighty Vasudhara falls where, with a backdrop of snow capped mountains and glaciers and set in an area of rocky heights, the Vishnu Ganga (Alakananda) falls from a height of 145 mts breaking into a myriad crystallize reflection of a rainbow.

Satopanth Tal

The tracking route has extended from Vasudhara falls to glaciated lake known as
Satopanth tal. It is 25 km away from Badrinath with rugged terrain, covered with snow, generally explored by mountaineers with a height of 14000 ft, 1.5 km wide.

It is believed that lord Branbha, Vishnu,Shiva meditated in three corners of this triangulated lake and still do. This lake is  known as Holy Trio or Lake of Divinity.

How to reach

This trip can be included with Valley of Flowers trek or while visiting to Badrinath by adding one or two days. You have to reach Josimath.

1. Reach Haridwar by train from your location.
2. Haridwar - Joshimath ( 280 km, appox 10 hours by road, via Rudraprayag will be better)
3. Joshimath - Badrinath (25 km) and Mana (3 km), by hiring car or by public transport.
# Pandukeshwar is an important place where vehicle movement has been controlled in one way in different timings.

Season to visit

May - June is the ideal time to visit but you can also go in last week of October but it become in accessible from mid November. During monsoon though the place receive less rainfall but the road condition may be bad due to landslide upto Badrinath.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1 - Badrinath to Mana village on the way Keshavprayag, Ghanteswari Temple, Vyas Gupha,
             Bhim Shila.
Day 2 - Mana - Vasudhara falls - Mana ( Round trek 10 km) & Badrinath by car.

# Day 3 - Vasudhara falls - Chakratheertha ( Trek 10km)
# Day 4 - Chakratheertha - Satopanth -Chakratheertha ( Round trek 10 km, including glacial walk)
# Day 5 - Chakratheertha - Vasudhara falls - Mana

Accommodation

Its very hard to find any proper accommodation or hotel in Mana as there are few hundreds of people live but one or two homestay can be available.

Its better to drive down for 3 km to Badrinath where numerous modes of accommodation are available like Hotel Devlok, Yatri Niwas,    Tourist Rest House of GMVN, Yoga Badrinath, Jagirdar G/House, Bharat Sevashram Sangha, Badrinath Temple G/House etc.

GPS

GPS (Global Positioning System ) is a satellite based technique where 24 satellite, currently 30 satellites are used in 6 orbits to monitor entire earth surface. It not only helps to identify exact location of any place but also very useful for different military activities.

Theses all information are quite well known fact about GPS but today we will discuss about GPS device and how it works and its extensive use in our daily life.

GPS Mechanism  - The network has been set up by 30 satellites orbitting around the earth with an                                      altitude of 20000 kms. Among these satellites atleast 3 will coincide with their network and send their data regarding latitude, longitude and height of the  place from MSL. This operation is based on a simple mathematical principle called Trilateration.

These satellites will rotate around the earth in sun-synchronous manner with a definite interval. Now the signals which are sent to the device in a speed of light will be processed in a few seconds and display the designated data. GPS satellites have atomic clocks to keep accurate time.

Device Mechanism -  Our ancestors did a great job to frame a map by doing extreme level of calculation and measurements. Now a days we can easily find out any place over the earth surface without knowing them well by help of a small device called GPS receiver.

There are 27 satellites ( 24 are in operation and 3 are extra) orbiting the Earth by making two complete rotation in a day from the height of approx 20000 kms from MSL. A GPS receiver's job is to locate 4 or more satellites, find out their distance from each of them and finally find out it's own location. To do this receiver has to know two things -

1.  The location of at least 3 satellites
2.   The distance between the device and each of those satellites.

The GPS receiver figure out these two things by analyzing high frequency, low power radio signals from satellites. These radio waves are electromagnetic energy which travel at a speed of light. The receiver can calculate how far the signals has traveled by timing how long it took to arrive. Satellites start transmitting the signals in the form of pseudo-random code and receivers start to receive the same  with a little lag of time which is exactly equals to travel time of the signals. The receiver multiplies this time by the speed of light to determine how far the signal traveled.

In order to do this measurement the satellite and receiver's clock have to be synchronized down to the nanosecond. To make satellite positioning system by using synchronized clock, both the devices and satellite have to use atomic clock which are very expensive. To overcome this problem the device resets its clock to be in synchronize with satellite's atomic clock. The receiver does it constantly whenever its remain on, which means accuracy become as atomic clocks used in satellites.

Once the receiver able to do this calculation , it can tell you Lat. , Long. , and Altitude of your current position. To make this navigation more user friendly, most receivers plug this raw data into map files stored in memory. A standard GPS receiver will not only place you on a map at any particular location, but will also trace your path across a map as you move. If you leave your receiver on, it can stay in constant communication with GPS satellites to see how your location is changing.

Application in Daily life -  Such GPS systems are used widely in navigation purposes like live                                                        mapping, tracking any gadgets, cab driving and many more. Here are some few possibilities and benefits in our busy and hectic life.

1. Know where your children are using GPS tracker device with them
2. Keep tracking of your elder family members in their trip, so that they don't wander off alone.
3. Book a cab like UBER using GPS and know their location when you are in rush.
4. Track your electronic gadgets like mobile phone, camera, laptops if lost them in some where.
5. Plan a road trip around interesting points, landmarks with a specific track by helping GPS devices.
6. Get emergency road side assistance with traffic updates for reaching a place within a short time.
7. In aviation and shipping transport GPS is widely used in state of Radar for navigation.
8. Find different amusement points easily like restaurants, movie points, park, museum etc with an          associate route direction in pre-loaded maps like google map.
9. With the help of GPS surveying landscapes, buildings and large infrastructure can be done easily.         Also it is used in mapping sector, including aerial mapping GIS.

Such GPS devices and trackers are available in different online and offline stores in worldwide in a cheap rate and some recent smartphones can also be used as GPS device with their in built technology.

CHOPTA _ the Mini Switzerland

Chopta Valley is a hill station located in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand state of India. The most beautiful scenic beauty of this place is the green valley at the height of around 2750 mts.

It offers   you  majestic   view  of  snow  covered   Himalayan  ranges  with  blue  sky  from  lush green  medows.

There  are  few  sight  scenes around  this  valley  and  it  is  noted  as  the starting  point  of  Tungnath  temple   and Chandrashila.

Chopta and its surroundings-

Tungnath -

It is the highest temple of Lord Shiva situated at the height of some 3600 mts. and also  known as one of the famous panch kedar shrines i.e. Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheswar and Kalpeshwar. Apart of this unprecedented Himalayan view is simply unexplainable.

Chandrashila -

It will give you mesmerising 360 degree view of Himalayan mountain peak like  Nanda Devi, Kedar, Chaukhamba etc from a height od 4000 mts. It is 1 km from Tungnath and 3 km from chopta valley through trecking. According to Indian mythology it is the place where Lord Rama meditated after defeating Ravana.

Deoria Tal -

It is a glaciated lake formed by glacial erosion in ancient times and located 3 km from                          Sari village of Chopta. It will give you panoramic view of different peaks like Bandarpunch, Nilkantha, Kalang, Kedar etc.

How to Reach -

Chopta is a hilly village located on the route of Rudraprayag - Ukhimath - Gopeshwar highway NH58. It can also be reached by road through Ukhimath to Joshimath. It is 40 km away from Ukhimath, 63 km from Rudraprayag and 225 km away from Haridwar which will take 9-10 hours to reach.

By Road  Chopta can be reached from either Ukhimath, or from Rudraprayag or from Haridwar through motorable road (NH 58). Garhwal Himalayan bus services are also available to connect Ukhimath with Joshimath by which one can reach Chopta.

By Train any one can reach upto Rishikesh 209 km away from Chopta and then avail cars, bus for it.

By Air  you have to reach Jolly Grant airport located in Dehradun 226 km away and the avail cars, taxis to reach either Rishikesh, Rudraprayag, Ukhimath.

As per my opinion by road or train will be better than airways.

Best time to visit in Chopta is October to December and for snow trekking  is January to March.

Package - Different tour packages like travelling, trekking, camping are available from Rs 1500/- to                    4200/- by Garhwal tours or Uttarakhand Tourism.
